Home Improvement New Year's Resolutions

The New Year gives us all the opportunity to set things straight and start anew. We sometimes even put up a New Year’s resolution list of the things we are going to prioritize the most for the fresh year ahead. We even look at ourselves and think about some changes we can do to improve the way we behave, look or deal with people.

Have you thought about fine-tuning your New Year’s resolution list a weensy bit? After all, we are talking about new beginnings and changes for 2012. One of the things that should show up on your New Year’s resolution list is a home improvement project.

Whether you’re initially thinking about a new paint job, replacing broken louvers on your windows or cleaning your roofs, it is important that you check all the facets of your home in order to find out what home improvement jobs you have to get done. Rank them in order of importance and set up a home improvement plan.

Here’s a checklist of some of the things you may have to look at:

  • Air conditioning system – The summer season in Australia is far from over. Temperature’s rising and your air conditioning system should be fully functional. Remove dust build ups and other debris from the vents or have it serviced.
  • Roof – You don’t have to wait until the next snap of nonstop rain showers come along before you check your roof to repair holes, cracks and splits. You can simply pick up a multi-purpose silicone sealant from the hardware store to repair the said damages. It works well with any roofing (even window) materials such as metal, aluminum, galvanized iron and PVC. Consider hiring a roof specialist if you think you can’t manage to go up the roof by yourself.
  • Gutters – Take advantage of the clear weather to inspect your gutters for leaking joints and rusting seams. Extreme rain and sun exposure from the past year may have also caused the gutters to sag and to be out of place. These problems can totally compromise your gutters’ performance. You should also be prepared to invest for a new guttering system if necessary if you find damages that are too overwhelming for you to fix.

These are just some of the aspects of your home that could possibly need some quick fix or serious repair task. Create a spreadsheet itemizing the budget, timeline and the importance of having a specific home improvement project done. Meet the schedules you set and turn your home improvement nightmares to home improvement dreams that do come true.

Tips on Hiring The Ideal Guttering Company

While it’s true that having a reliable guttering system is not mandatory, it is still wise to actually have one installed as part of your roofing structure. Most homeowners forget that gutters are responsible in preventing various forms of water damage that can harm different parts of a home. A guttering system deals with directing rainwater away from the house. At the end of the downspout, there usually is a compartment where rainwater is properly collected.

Are we going to wait until your foundation starts to rot? Will you ignore the early signs of mold growth on your walls and ceilings until it breeds other icky fungi? It is best to understand early on that having gutters installed will help in taking care of a house’s overall condition. You may not see any obvious indications that gutters should be an essential part of outdoor living as of the moment but in the long run, but it’s probably best to have one to avoid dealing with potentially stressful house problems.

There are many things to consider once you decide to get gutters installed on your roof. The first thing that you need to do is to look for the right gutter company to do the job for you. A lot of companies can offer multiple home improvement services like landscaping, house painting, window treatments including gutter installations. It is more advisable to go for a company that primarily focuses on gutter services. Companies as such prove to be the specialists on the field and are knowledgeable about anything concerning gutters.

There are many guttering companies out there to choose from. To narrow down your options, utilize any of your available resources to find out which company can best deliver your expectations. Ask your colleagues, friends or even family members who you think have a dependable guttering system which you can use for your own home, for recommendations. Chances are, if they are satisfied with the guttering company they hired, you might as well be. Perform an online research and make a list of gutter companies you will be interested and then make your own assessment to compare and evaluate each and one of them. Checking out established customer review websites are a great way to know more about these companies from their customers’ experiences with them. You can also pick up the phone and call their contact service departments and have them talk to you about how their guttering services work and if they will fit your current home structure.

Deciding on having a guttering system installed will assist any homeowner in preserving and protecting the quality of their home. Choosing the right gutter company to hire is also very essential part of the process.

Home Maintenance 101: Gutter Inspection

One of the most overlooked facets of home maintenance routine is gutter inspection.  Skipping this significant maintenance task can jeopardize your home’s overall condition from being in tip-top shape.

A long list of problems can arise from ignoring the gutters. It all begins with failure to schedule regular cleaning especially if you have standard gutters installed. If you can’t remember the last time you had your gutters checked, you can already assume that they may be clogged or damaged to a certain degree already.

Even if you have the most sophisticated guttering system installed, it will not function the way it should if it’s not properly maintained. It is therefore recommended to set up regular maintenance schedule for your gutters to ensure that they will properly function at all times.
Aside from regular maintenance, looking for signs that your gutters need considerable attention will help prevent the catastrophic effects of common gutter problems. Every homeowner should be observant of the obvious (and not so obvious) indications of potential gutter troubles.

During the cold months of winter, take a look at the snow piling up on the roof and inside the gutters. Even the toughest gutter materials can succumb to the weight of ice build-up. The water may seep through the gutters and can cause water to pour out into your walls and eventually cause them to rot.

Even the autumn leaf season can bring tumultuous problems to your gutters. Regular gutters can welcome falling leaves along with other debris like seeds, twigs and dirt which can festively accumulate inside them quickly. Clogged gutters will not be able to drain the rainwater coming from the roof. Instead, it will fall off the roof or will pool throughout the foundation of the house and will cause it to crack. Consequently, a number of leakage problems will definitely deteriorate the house if not attended to properly.

Leakage problems involving gutters are easy to spot. For instance, peeling paints in your home’s exterior is a sign that there’s water trickling just above the wall’s surface. Vertical water stains at the siding of your home is a result of backsplash and continuous water dripping. Molds showing in your home’s interior are signs that water is seeping through the walls, ceiling and foundation.

It is essential to add a basic gutter inspection to your home maintenance routine to keep an eye on the condition of your home’s gutters. Early detection of potential gutter problems can help you save money from home repair costs and will lengthen the life of your gutters.
